Lockdown birthday party ideas
A lockdown birthday… Doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing right now, but I’m going to show you that actually - you can make it a super special experience, for adults and kids alike.
A cake
No birthday is actually worth anything without a cake (professional opinion). Because we are obviously celebrating in small numbers, you don’t need a big cake - a small one will be perfect for it. No waste, but equally beautiful. If you live locally to Reading, I sell these directly in my shop, and deliver them! It just shows you can have a cheerful party while at home.
Make a blanket fort and adorn it with fairy lights
Nothing to make a moment feel cosier or more special. Also - fun. You can even have an indoor picnic in it.
Invite friends and family over a Zoom party
It was my boyfriend’s birthday last week, and we had a party with his family on Zoom. Just send an invite to everyone with a link and a time, they can all prepare a cake for the occasion (so everyone has some!), a bit of bubbly, and everyone can sing. It’s a fab way to be reunited in a safe and fun way.
Play board games
You can play, with the family or housemates in the same home as you, but also over Zoom. Things like Pictionary, Who am I, What am I, Categories work fabulously! There are even websites that allow you to play online board games with your friends.
Make a simple birthday corner with cool props
Go around your house - I KNOW you have things to create a fun backdrop / party corner. Vases, trinkets, books, plaids, cushions, paper you can paint - just make it special by gathering all these things and creating a cosy nook.
If you are feeling inspired, you can:
-make this rainbow pinata
-make this striped backdrop
-make this flower crown
Or be inspired and create your own ideas!
Do a photo challenge
Pick something that the birthday person loves - Disney, superheros, art - and ask guests to recreate a scene, or something that represents the theme, with things that they can find at home. I’ve been LOVING the Getty Museum Challenge - people recreating pieces of art. You can do it with Disney, or anything!
Tell everyone to come to the party in a themed costume
Like the photo challenge - but make them dress like a character or a theme, only with things they have available at home. It can mean wearing colours representing a character - I wore green, purple and red for Ariel at a friend’s wedding for example - or going full on and creating cardboard accessories.
Activities as gifts
Instead of giving them only things, make a jar with activity ideas to do after lockdown.
The most important thing is - make it feel special. Right now, that is what we all need: feel loved, special, and cared for. In these crazy times, that is what will get us through. If you would like a cake, you can order one here!
Stay safe, love hard 💖
This is the cake I made for Thib’s birthday - because lockdown birthdays can be cool AF too.
