VEGAN WEDDING CAKES

Plant-based Perfection

Before you ask - yes, all my cakes are vegan. Not all my couples are though - which is why I have created this special page!

Vegan wedding cakes.

There, I said it. The phrase that many, many couples will never have dreamt of uttering. BUT HEAR ME OUT. Vegan wedding cakes are such an awesome idea and I’ll tell you why…

  1. They’re sustainable AF. I’m not going to give you a lecture in plant-based eating and the serious good turn it does for the environment, but when you cut dairy out of your wedding cake, it’s like you’re giving our dear old Planet Earth a teeny, tiny high five. Just a super quick fun fact for you: obtaining one litre of cow’s milk can create over three times the emissions of soya milk, and uses up much more farming land (depending on the methods used). Worth thinking about, no?

What they say

“Sarah prepared a beautiful cake for us, delivered to our venue, and made sure it looked fresh and amazing for our wedding day. All of our guests enjoyed eating the three different flavours, and of course many comments on how great it looked. It was brilliant to find a vegan cake that would fit with the aesthetic we wanted - Sarah was the only option! Highly recommended.”

2. They taste a-ma-zing. Well, mine do anyway. There’s long been a vicious rumour floating around that vegan cakes don’t taste as nice as the real thing, and I often find myself on a bit of a one-woman mission to prove that this is nonsense. Come in for a tasting and see for yourself.

3. Every single egg- or dairy-free guest will be overjoyed. Seriously, how many guests have you had replying to your RSVPs with a slightly sheepish dietary need? A lot, right? That’s because the age of eating anything and everything is over and many, many humans find their tummies just don’t work so well after ingesting lots of gluten, dairy, nuts or meat. Nonetheless, there is still a little bit of stigma around requesting a “special meal” and people often feel embarrassed about being a difficult guest. But give them a vegan wedding cake as well as treats they can eat and they’ll be queuing up for seconds, embarrassment well and truly avoided. I promise to offer things for every single of your guests.

4. All the cool kids are doing it. More couples than ever before are requesting vegan wedding cakes. The demand for them is so high that most of my customers request that at least one tier be vegan. People are much more curious about what’s going into their food right now and I, for one, am delighted. Even if you only follow a plant-based diet some of the time, the appeal of a vegan wedding cake rings true. With flavours like chocolate, oreo, and biscoff to choose from, what’s not to like?

  • Who can eat a vegan wedding cake?

Everyone who is vegan and most people who aren’t vegan! I mean, you’d have to have some fairly niche allergies for me not to be able to make your vegan wedding cake, but it’s always worth checking, of course. But the whole point of a vegan wedding cake is that it’ll appeal to far more people than a cake made from traditional ingredients. I can cater for gluten free, soya free and nut free guests.

A few common questions I get asked about my vegan wedding cakes:

  • What are vegan wedding cakes made of?

Well, it doesn’t involve parsnips, I can tell you that. Vegan cake is cake made without eggs, dairy butter or dairy milk. Each of these standard ingredients is easily replaced by plant-based substitutes, like aquafaba or flaxseed for eggs, non-trans fat margarine or oils for butters and plant milks for milk.

  • Are they more expensive than a traditional wedding cake?

Fear not. Plant-based milks can be a little pricier than cow’s milk but the cost increase is pretty nominal. The difference is very small and, naturally, I bulk buy my ingredients as I make many, many cakes in any given month. In short, don’t let cost put you off. There’s almost no difference.

  • I’m worried that a vegan wedding cake might make us look a little pretentious…are my worries valid?

I feel you. Veganism and pretentiousness have previously gone hand-in-hand. We’ve all heard the jokes (some of them are pretty funny!). It’s natural to feel nervous about it, but an environmentally-sound choice like a vegan wedding cake is, firstly, not at all unusual these days and, secondly, a sound choice that you won’t regret. The world is fast waking up to the benefits of plant-based living, so don’t give it another thought. It’s actually a very inclusive choice to make: one of the best ways to make sure everyone has the best time is to make sure they’ve had a good feed. Months or years after attending weddings, what your guests remember is either how they went hungry, or how awesome the food was. Food is one of the most important parts of the day and the thing everyone remembers because it plays such a huge part in our sensory memory of the wedding. Cake is a super special kind of fuel: it has no real nutritional value, it exists just to be relished. That’s why I love it so.

  • Is a non-traditional wedding cake somehow less special than a vegan one?

Those of us who have to battle the old allergy/intolerance dragon on a daily basis – gluten-free, soya-free, nut-free, egg-free, dairy-free – are used to going places and going hungry. That’s why it’s such a magic feeling when you go somewhere and the people who have invited you have included you in their planning. It is one of the most potent ways to show someone you love them. I would argue that having a cake that everyone can enjoy is actually a more special choice.

I work with cool couples who are after a showstopper of a vegan wedding cake - because they know they deserve it. Is that you?
